47 Cards (1933-1935) German Sammelwerk cards were collectible cards found in cigarette packs. The cards were issued in thematic groups and each image was numbered so that collectors could arrange and store them in special albums made for the cards. The images on these Sammelwerk cards were created by Heinrich Hoffmann, Adolf Hitler's official photographer and issued by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, G.m.b.H.
Each card has a German caption on the back, as well as the group and image number. The German Sammelwerk photograph collection contains a collection of cigarette cards issued between 1933 and 1939 in Germany. These are the “Larger Size” cards 6 ¾ x 4 ¾ opposed to the smaller size. Photo cards were a way to promote Nazi propaganda while appeasing Hitler and increasing sales in the face of public wariness of tobacco.
